LAHORE: After two decades, the vibrant celebration of Basant is set to reclaim Lahore’s skies with a meticulously organized revival, reigniting the thrill and festivity many thought had been lost forever.
As the much-awaited countdown nears its end, the city is alive with anticipation, ready to welcome back the beloved tradition of kite flying.
From the bustling alleys of the ancient walled city to lively modern neighborhoods, markets are flourishing with eager shoppers seeking kites and string. Splashes of yellow—through flags, banners, and twinkling lights—brighten shopping hubs and inner-city roads alike. Historical landmarks gleam under floral adornments and festive illuminations, casting an enchanting aura over Lahore.
Kite and string sales have reportedly soared to an impressive Rs5.4 billion, according to traders, while local restaurants are crafting special menus to match the celebratory spirit. The Punjab government has announced February 6 and 7 as public holidays across the province, ensuring an uninterrupted two-day festival. With Kashmir Solidarity Day already falling on February 5, residents in Punjab are set to enjoy a rare three-day weekend.
As celebrations edge closer, the city hums with excitement. Crowded markets display bold, innovative kite designs that have quickly captured everyone’s imagination. To ensure safety, authorities have outlawed chemical-coated strings and will monitor activities using drones. Meanwhile, kite flying has been expressly prohibited in over 15 neighborhoods around Lahore Airport to minimize any risks to aviation. Clear warnings have been issued to violators in these restricted zones.
Emergency services, including police forces and Rescue 1122 teams, will remain on standby throughout the festivities to promptly address any incidents.
Officials underscore the essence of Basant as a celebration of joy, unity, and life’s vibrancy. Citizens are urged to uphold safety measures and embrace responsibility so that the festival brings widespread happiness without compromising wellbeing.
