Pakistan launches Iran Transit Route, Sends First Meat Shipment to Central Asia

KARACHI: Pakistan has activated a new overland trade corridor through Iran, with the first export consignment successfully dispatched toward Tashkent, signaling a major boost to regional connectivity.

The launch was marked by an inauguration ceremony at the TIR terminal in Karachi, formally initiating operations under the international TIR (Transports Internationaux Routiers) system  designed to streamline cross-border cargo movement.

According to Pakistan Customs, the new route is expected to cut transit times and improve efficiency for exporters. The inaugural shipment, carrying frozen beef, is being transported in temperature-controlled trucks to ensure quality during the long journey.

The convoy will cross into Iran via the Gabd–Reemdan border and continue onward to Central Asian destinations.

Authorities said several border points  including Taftan, Reemdan, Sost, and Gwadar are now fully equipped for TIR operations, with simplified procedures introduced to facilitate smoother trade flows.

Senior customs officials, including Director General Tariq Rangoonwala, attended the launch event and termed the initiative a key step toward strengthening Pakistan’s transit trade network.

Officials emphasized that the corridor would enhance Gwadar’s role as a strategic trade hub and open up new export opportunities in Central Asia. They also noted increased coordination among customs departments, transport operators, and logistics firms as part of broader efforts to expand regional trade.

With rising container traffic already being observed at Karachi Port, the new route is expected to further position Pakistan as a critical link connecting South Asia with the Middle East and Central Asia, offering faster and more reliable transit options for exporters.
