KARACHI: Sindh has recorded a concerning increase in HIV cases during 2026, with health authorities urging immediate action to curb the spread.
According to officials, the total number of reported cases in the province has climbed to 894 this year. Alarmingly, 329 of these cases involve children, including 188 boys and 141 girls, highlighting a troubling trend.
Medical experts have attributed a significant portion of infections to unsafe healthcare practices, stressing the need for stricter regulation, better hygiene standards, and improved medical oversight. They also pointed out that the aftermath of the Rato Dero HIV outbreak continues to impact affected communities, with new cases still being detected.
In addition to rising infections among children, an increasing number of adult cases has also been observed. Experts are calling for stronger prevention strategies, expanded awareness campaigns, and routine screening to identify cases early.
Authorities emphasize that timely diagnosis and access to treatment are crucial in controlling the virus. The provincial health department says screening drives and public awareness initiatives are ongoing across Sindh.
At the national level, it was recently disclosed in the National Assembly of Pakistan that more than 84,000 people are living with HIV/AIDS across the country. Federal Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal informed lawmakers that these patients are being provided free treatment under the National AIDS Control Program at 98 centers nationwide.
Health officials warn that sustained efforts and stronger safeguards are essential to prevent further escalation.
