Sindh CM Murad Ali Shah announces Rs7 billion relief for Gul Plaza victims, distributes Rs511M cheques

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah announced a Rs7 billion relief package for Gul Plaza fire victims, with Rs5.6 billion secured and Rs511 million distributed among 200 verified victims. The fire in January claimed over 70 lives and destroyed hundreds of shops.

During a ceremony at the CM House, Murad described the tragedy as devastating and noted that Rs10 million compensation has been paid to families of 72 deceased, with ongoing verification for four cases. Additionally, 849 shopkeepers received Rs500,000 each during Ramadan to aid their recovery.

The government is constructing a new Gul Plaza with the same number of shops within two years. The total compensation process involves assessing inventory losses from 1,209 shops, with further payments pending verification by KCCI.

Murad emphasized the government’s commitment to support and rehabilitation, acknowledging the resilience of the affected families and traders. He highlighted efforts to improve safety measures and prevent future tragedies, including forming a committee to implement recommendations from the Judicial Commission report.

The CM also mentioned ongoing infrastructure projects across Karachi, including the upcoming completion of Azeempura Flyover in 90 days and other road works, with a focus on maintaining quality standards.

He stated that President Asif Ali Zardari has engaged Chinese authorities, leading to a firefighting plan to enhance emergency response systems. The ceremony was attended by provincial ministers, officials, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, stakeholders, and victims.
