Karachi’s new 39km Shahrah-e-Bhutto to be inaugurated by Bilawal today

KARACHI: Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is scheduled to formally inaugurate the Shahrah-e-Bhutto project in Karachi today, marking the opening of a major new road development in the city.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said the project was initially conceptualised by former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and has now been completed under the current provincial administration. He described it as an important infrastructure milestone aimed at benefiting Karachi’s residents.

The new highway is expected to significantly improve traffic flow across the city by reducing congestion, shortening travel times, and enhancing overall urban mobility. Officials also believe it will help lower fuel consumption and make daily commuting more efficient.

The 39-kilometre corridor has been constructed at a cost exceeding Rs40 billion. It features multiple modern interchanges, a design speed of up to 100 km/h, and an advanced tolling system intended to streamline traffic movement.

Authorities added that the route will provide direct connectivity from Qayyumabad to the M-9 motorway, easing access to key areas including Jinnah Terminal and surrounding traffic networks. Planners have also described it as a strategic economic link connecting Karachi’s port, industrial zones, and highways leading to the rest of the country.
