WEB DESK: In a significant legal development, Syria’s criminal court has sentenced Sheikh Ahmad Badr al-Din Hassoun, the former Grand Mufti of Syria, to life imprisonment. Reports from Arab media indicate that the court found him guilty of supporting the regime of Bashar al-Assad, the country’s ousted president.
Sheikh Ahmad, who served as Syria’s Grand Mufti from 2005 until 2021, was also accused of inciting sectarian strife and unrest within the country. He is widely regarded as a close ally of President Assad’s government.
The reports further reveal that this is part of a broader crackdown, with Syrian courts having sentenced a total of 10 individuals in various cases related to political and sectarian issues.
