A statement was issued regarding the visit of the European Union’s Special Representative for Human Rights, Olaf Skoog, to Pakistan.
The spokesperson stated that the EU Special Representative for Human Rights visited Pakistan for one week, with the mission aimed at discussing human rights and labor rights issues with Pakistan.
The spokesperson mentioned that Ambassador Olaf Skoog met with federal and provincial ministers, military leadership, and human rights defenders.
It was noted that Pakistan’s status as the largest beneficiary of GSP Plus was appreciated, and Ambassador Olaf Skoog emphasized the importance of relations based on shared values and the need to ensure human rights.
The EU spokesperson said that the protection of religious freedom and minority rights without discrimination is essential.
The spokesperson added that the Special Representative met with key stakeholders in Lahore and discussed the protection of minority rights. He urged Pakistani authorities to ensure adherence to the relevant international conventions.
The statement mentioned that during meetings with Pakistani authorities, the EU representative discussed freedom of expression, media freedom, the right to a fair trial, enforced disappearances, and other issues. Discussions also covered blasphemy laws, women’s rights, and forced religious conversions.
The statement further said that access to European markets for Pakistani exports will be conditional on Pakistan’s progress on human rights.
