WEB DESK: Ted Turner, the legendary broadcaster who transformed the way the world consumes news, has passed away at the age of 87. His death was confirmed by CNN on Wednesday.
In 1980, Turner launched CNN the world’s first 24-hour television news network introducing nonstop news coverage at a time when many doubted the idea could succeed. Critics initially mocked the venture, but it eventually grew into one of the most recognized and influential news organizations globally.
Turner played a major role in reshaping the media industry, expanding his influence through networks including Cartoon Network, TNT, and TBS. He was also widely respected for his humanitarian work, environmental advocacy, and charitable contributions, particularly his support for the United Nations.
Following the announcement of his death, journalists, political figures, and media leaders around the world paid tribute to his remarkable legacy. CNN Chairman and CEO Mark Thompson praised Turner as a bold and visionary leader whose ideas changed broadcast journalism forever.
Turner had disclosed in 2018 that he was battling Lewy body dementia, a progressive neurological disease.
