WASHINGTON: The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the termination of Harvard University’s tax-exempt status.
According to foreign media reports, the Trump administration has instructed the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to revoke Harvard University’s tax exemption.
President Trump had already frozen more than $2 billion in federal grants to Harvard University.
The White House had demanded that Harvard University make changes in hiring, admissions, and teaching practices to stop anti-Semitism on campus.
However, the university rejected the Trump administration’s demand, stating that the White House was attempting to exert control over Harvard.
As a result, the Trump administration has taken a stringent action regarding Harvard University’s tax exemption status.
In the U.S., the status of tax exemption is granted to charitable, religious, educational organizations, and civil welfare groups, but they are also required to comply with laws concerning participation in certain political activities.
Experts indicate that there is no evidence suggesting that Harvard University has violated these laws, and the IRS is expected to remain neutral in this matter.
However, American media reports that President Trump has already made political appointments by removing several officials positioned in key roles within the IRS.
It is noteworthy that President Donald Trump has criticized Harvard University, saying that it no longer deserves federal funding.
Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, that Harvard can no longer be considered a standard educational institution and should not be included in any list of the world’s great universities. He referred to Harvard as a joke that teaches hatred and stupidity and stated that it should not receive any further federal funds.
