LAHORE: Two women arrested on allegations of theft and fraud died in police custody under unexplained circumstances, prompting an official inquiry, police sources said on Thursday.
The deceased, identified as Anmol and Amna, were initially taken into custody by Township Police after local residents allegedly apprehended them and handed them over to authorities. Police said both women had previous criminal records and were suspected of drug addiction.
According to officials, the women were transferred to the police investigation wing after a case was registered against them. Their condition reportedly worsened while they were being shifted to the women’s police station on Litton Road, and they were declared dead during their transfer to a hospital.
The bodies have been moved to a hospital for postmortem examination, which authorities say will determine the exact cause of death.
Police stated that a transparent investigation has been launched into the incident.
DIG Investigation Zeeshan Raza said the postmortem was delayed because the deceased did not have identity cards, and their immediate family members were also unable to provide the required documents.
He added that other relatives have since come forward with the necessary identification, allowing the autopsy process to proceed.
According to the DIG, the postmortem findings will be crucial in establishing the circumstances surrounding the women’s deaths.
