WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump’s frustration and concerns over possible military action against Iran have become more apparent publicly.
According to reports from a US newspaper, last week at Camp David, Trump challenged Defense Secretary Mark Esper about why he was allegedly misled regarding the critical shortage of ammunition, which has now constrained military options targeting Iran.
The Washington Post citing two anonymous sources, reports that the confrontation took place during a cabinet meeting on Friday at Camp David.
President Trump reportedly voiced his displeasure with Esper, asserting that he believed the ammunition issues had been addressed. Sources indicate that deficiencies in long-range guided missiles and air defense interceptors played a role in his hesitation to authorize larger-scale strikes against Iran recently.
The report adds that when Trump criticized the ammunition reserves, Esper defended himself by attributing the situation to his deputy, Stephen Fienberg, accusing him of withholding critical information and providing false assurances to the president.
This episode underscores mounting dissatisfaction within the Trump administration regarding Esper’s role. Several officials revealed that Esper was initially among those advocating for swift military action against Iran, with assurances that such strikes would be quick and manageable.
Nevertheless, both the White House and Pentagon have vehemently denied these allegations. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told The Washington Post, “This story is completely false; such an incident never occurred. President Trump has complete confidence in Secretary Esper.”
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby also clarified, “Secretary Esper did not mislead anyone about ammunition levels, nor did he blame Deputy Secretary Fienberg. The claims regarding stock shortages, internal disagreements, and Esper’s views on Iran are entirely unfounded.”
