KARACHI: The body of a child who fell into a manhole in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Iqbal area has been recovered after 14 hours of search efforts. Rescue sources reported that the child’s body was discovered in a drain near the Federal Urdu University’s Gulshan Campus, not far from Karachi University.
Three-year-old Ibrahim disappeared on Sunday night after falling into an uncovered manhole near the Nipa flyover in Gulshan-e-Iqbal.
Although rescue teams arrived promptly, their operations were delayed due to the unavailability of heavy machinery. This situation led local residents to step in and provide their own tools to aid in the recovery efforts.
Earlier today, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab expressed deep concern over the incident and reassured the grieving family that all necessary measures were being taken. He confirmed that CCTV footage related to the event had been secured and would be reviewed to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation. The mayor also vowed to hold those responsible for any administrative lapses accountable.
Mayor Wahab pointed out ongoing safety initiatives, mentioning that the Karachi Water Board installed 88,000 manhole covers over the past year. He also voiced his disappointment over attempts to politicize the tragedy, stating that the administration’s focus remains on resolving the issue.
Meanwhile, the Sindh government has launched an inquiry into the missing manhole cover. City authorities continue their efforts amidst rising public concern as they address this preventable incident.
